Hurricane coming, what should I buy BEFORE the stores sell out?

Not all inclusive, adapt for your needs, especially taking into consideration, infants, elderly, disabled and pets. There IS a lot of stuff here. Don't be overwhelmed, just use good judgement. I would consider buying the largest tarp you can find, a plastic one at the very least.  These are only ideas. 

Cooking/Lighting:
Matches or lighter
Manual can opener
Flashlights
AAA/AA/C/D Batteries
9 Volt Batteries
Propane
Gas
Gas cans filled-Can you say Hurricane Sandy (NY,NJ)
Portable radio- for information when there is no power
Did you fill your car up BEFORE the storm?
Hand warmers
Candles/hurricane lamp
Did you pull out a couple hundred dollars in cash?

Home Improvement Store:
Duct tape
Lumber (plywood) this is for your windows when they blow out
Tarps (for your roof and windows, should they blow out or leak)
Chain saws, axes, hand saws
Generator

Hammer and nails, screws

Cleaning supplies
Mop

Dust pan
All purpose floor cleaner

Garbage bags (heavy duty)

  1. One of the things that was a God-send during the 3 hurricanes of 2004 we went through was 'glow-sticks' for lighting the house at night. You can purchase these for about $1 each or less in bulk from nicaboyne.com. They are non-toxic, cool to the touch, give off safe light for getting around the house and last 18-24 hours. Please remind people NOT to use anything flamable indoors for lighting. Glow sticks are the only way to go. Use battery lanterns for reading, but glowsticks for lighting rooms and pathways.
